Keanu Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Even when the engine is nice and warm, having driven it for few miles, and then if I restart my galaxy the ignition fails to start or make any sound of whatsoever, THEN out of the blue about 5 - 10 seconds later with the ignition still fully turned - it starts! <_< Any ideas guys? Is it the glow plugs on their way out or some other electrical issue. The battery charge is fine as I have just had it full serviced. Quote
big_kev Posted January 13, 2008 Report Posted January 13, 2008 Nothing to do with the glow plugs, the engine will still start without them it just won't be happy about it. If the engine isn't turning over your looking at electrical, most likely the ignition relay or switch. Quote
Beyond Help? Posted January 14, 2008 Report Posted January 14, 2008 There is loads more we need to know to be able to help you. Does it do it first thing in the morning when the engine is cold? What if it has been standing for 20 minutes or more, at what point does it not do this? Is the engine cranking but not firing? Or not cranking? Look at the door LED when it does it, is it flashing really fast? Quote
HalfPint Posted January 15, 2008 Report Posted January 15, 2008 Another thing you could try is as your vehicle is an auto.as you turn the key and nothing happens try wriggling the auto gear shift slightly as there is an inhibitor switch to stop you starting the vehicle in gear.As you normally start the vehicle in park try puttting it in neutral and starting the car. Otherwise check the power relays you may have a lazy relay.try giving them all a tap as you turn the vehicle over if it suddenly turns over you will just have to narrow it down till you find the offending bugger. Keanu Posted January 16, 2008 Author Report Posted January 16, 2008 (edited) It pretty much happens at any time it chooses to! :18: On cold mornings the engine starts at first ignition turn, and once I have driven it for a while until the engine temprature reads average, stop the car and go to the shops, and when I return it fails to make an ignition, but hold the key turned for several seconds and all of a sudden it starts! It was fully service a month ago. The engine makes NO NOISE when the ignition key is fully turned, I could hear my thoughts!!! Will look at the flashing LED next time. Does that suggest the immoboliser is playing around? And yes occassionally I have moved the gear stick from Park to Neutral and it will start, BUT not always. I have a feeling it may be the ignition switch in steering column NOT making full contact, as Big Kev suggested, does anyone else reckon that may be the culprit? HalfPint Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 I don't think it's the ignition switch because as you say it only goes peter tong when the engine is hot,so parts have expanded.Have you thought about checking the starter motor, as i had one donkeys years ago on a different ford were the commuter (the middle spinning bit) of the motor was impregnated with dust from the brushes causing a dead section.pulled apart and cleaned fullly and was fine from then on. You can only try can't you. Quote
tomy Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 I would check the starter as well , I had a car a few years ago and it would turn over fine when it was cold but after it had been run for even a short journey the starter wouldnt even turn untill it was cold again , changing the starter motor cured it straight away. HalfPint Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 Had a bit of a dyslexic moment there. should of read pete tong and the other word was commutator. What a PLONKER RODNEY Quote
MrT Posted January 16, 2008 Report Posted January 16, 2008 When my battery was just about to give up everything else appeared fine but nothing happened when I turned the key. Normally with a dead battery when you turn the key everything else dims or stops but oddly this did not happen. I also had odd behaviour from the brake pad warning light. My interlock between the autobox and ignition key appears to be a mechanical cable link, the key will not turn and you cannot remove it, if you are in a gear. There is also an electrical link where you cannot move the gear lever out of park unless you press the brake pedal first. Quote
Keanu Posted January 16, 2008 Author Report Posted January 16, 2008 I don't like the sound of this!!!! ;) I hear a starter motor is expensive. What's the price tag for a deisel engine starter motor? < Quote
gaznlou Posted January 17, 2008 Report Posted January 17, 2008 Sorry Just Noticed yours is a Automatic Starter is even more money, Quote
